The Peaceful Framland in Water Villages at Qingpu

The site of Qingpu -- the typical village around Shanghai is so beautiful and peaceful that it is hard to imagine a new modern city there ruining all this beauty. The vastness of the landscape, the beauty of the rivers, the calm of the farms, form a presence inappropriate to any notion of development.
It would require courage to believe, at the beginning of the 21st century, under the trend of urbanization, that the village can find a smart way to show its own unique value.
The only built structure is now fundamentally suspect, which causes lots of things to be out of our control -- permanent political, financial, cultural turmoil. Creating an interesting lifestyle which can attract the attention of the public may be the feasible way. Therefore, this project is more a discourse on how we can create another lifestyle -- an attractive and friendly life of the village, keeping away from the whirlpool caused by the rapid development of Chinese society. At the moment when the local government realizes they can get an ideal situation, which they can never get by ruining their land, they will drop their blind thoughts of copy the ways of other modern cities.
However, the power of local inhabitants is limited. We need to look for new energy from outside of the area.

WATERWAY SYSTEM

Instead of building a new regular road system on the farmland, the local waterway system attracts out attention. The central waterway connects Qingpu downtown and the historical watertown. By using the waterway system, we would largely save the original landscape of this area, and also provides a show lifestyle, which is appropriate for an artist village and tourist destination.

STATISTICS & STRATEGY

There are 222,000 people taking part in the culture industry in Shanghai, and 15% are young artists. We define this area as artists villages for 20% of these young artists. The working and living area of each artist is around 60 m². Thus, 222,000×15%×20%×60=399,600 m². This model is a 1/8 sample of the total, 1/8×399,600=50,000 m². We have researched the height, density and attitudes toward rivers in several different ways. Finally, we choose the last option. In that way, we build all the houses along the river and try to keep a friendly attitude towards the original landscape.
